How to Start NoFap? Do These 7 Things Before Starting NoFap

So You’ve decided to follow nofap and wondering where to start. Don’t worry, I’m gonna tell you exactly where to start and what are the things you should do before starting nofap.

What is NoFap?

NoFap is the practice of living a porn and masturbation-free life.

If you’ve decided to follow nofap, you probably already know the harmful side effects of PMO(porn, masturbation, orgasm). You’ve experienced how porn and masturbation affect your social and personal life.

If you’ve experienced its harmful side effects, then you’re not alone. More and more people are recognizing it and are deciding to kick porn and masturbation out of their life. The popularity of nofap is growing day by day.

I did a poll on my Instagram(@the_fapstronaut) asking people whether porn and masturbation have had bad effects on their personal and social life. Let’s look at the results.

93% of people said that porn and masturbation have had bad effects on their personal and social life.

You’ve made the right decision to kick porn and masturbation out of your life.

How to Start NoFap?

Do these 7 things before starting nofap.

1. Write down the reason behind starting NoFap

People start nofap for a lot of reasons. Some do it to get the so-called “superpowers”, some for fun and some do it because it’s in trend.

To each his own. I’m not here to judge you for your reason to follow nofap.

But what I’ve realized is that people who do it only for nofap benefits or for fun, don’t last long on nofap.

Yes, nofap has a lot of amazing benefits, but if you do it only for the benefits, you might get disappointed and quit before you start experiencing the benefits.

Porn and masturbation have a lot of downsides and all those nofap benefits are just rewards for kicking porn and masturbation out of your life.

If your goal is to kick porn and masturbation out of your life, then you’re more likely to succeed than if you just do it for the benefits.

Whatever the reason behind you following nofap, write it down on paper and keep it in a safe place.

That piece of paper will motivate you to keep following nofap whenever you feel like relapsing.

2. Install a Porn Blocker

This is an easy and quick way to make sure you don’t relapse.

Just install a porn blocker on all your devices and then set a random password or let someone else set it for you.

Installing a porn blocker is important because relying only on your willpower to not watch porn is a recipe for disaster.

You’re gonna get a lot of urges on nofap to watch porn, especially during the initial days and a porn blocker will make sure that you don’t.

You’ll first feel frustrated for not being able to watch porn, but later you’ll thank yourself that you were not able to access it when you were feeling horny. Use technology to your advantage.

3. Make a Habit of Exercising and Meditating

Nothing will help you in your nofap journey as much as exercising and meditating. It’ll make your nofap journey 10 times easier.

You’re gonna get a lot of urges on nofap and the best way to control urges is to exercise and meditate regularly.

When you do nofap and retain your semen, sexual energy builds up inside your body. The best way to utilize that sexual energy is to exercise and build a good physique.

Let’s look at what other people think about exercising and mediating on nofap.

Not only that, you’re gonna get better muscle growth and your performance in the gym will improve on nofap.

4. Limit Your Time on Social Media

For a lot of people, social media is their biggest trigger.

Be careful while scrolling through social media, especially Instagram.

Unfollow all the hot models or any content on social media that can trigger your urges on nofap.

If you’re looking at half-naked women on Instagram or TikTok, it’s gonna be very difficult to follow nofap. Sooner or later you’re gonna relapse if you keep looking at half-naked women on Instagram and TikTok. These platforms are nothing short of soft porn.

I asked people whether they find social media triggering or not on my Instagram(@the_fapstronaut). Let’s look at the results.

83% of people said that they find social media triggering. It triggers their urges on nofap.

Unfollow all the people, pages, content on social media that can trigger your urges and limit your time on social media.

5. Find Something to Replace Porn & Masturbation

The single biggest reason people fail on nofap is that they don’t replace porn and masturbation with something else.

Watching porn and masturbating releases a huge amount of dopamine, that’s why it gives you pleasure in the short run.

When you take out that source of dopamine, your brain gonna get starved of dopamine and nothing will feel pleasurable, and you’ll be tempted to watch porn or jerk off to feel pleasure.

The best way to avoid that temptation is to replace porn and masturbation with another dopamine-releasing activity.

You can build a new habit or learn a new skill to keep yourself occupied both physically and mentally.

When you keep yourself busy, you’re not gonna get as many urges, and following a nofap lifestyle will be easier.

Take a course on Udemy or Skillshare about photography, painting, finance, history, or anything else that you want. That way you can keep yourself busy, feel pleasure and learn something new all at the same time.

If you’ve been masturbating and watching porn regularly, then you’ve been wasting a lot of time and energy on it. You need to apply that same time and energy into something constructive.

If you just stop watching porn and masturbating and don’t replace it with something else, then you’re gonna feel like something is missing from your life and you’ll be tempted to go back to it.

6. Prepare Yourself For Relapses

This is the hard truth about nofap. You can’t kick porn and masturbation out of your life without relapses.

If you want to know what are the common reasons people relapse on nofap and how to avoid them, check out my THIS ARTICLE.

If you decide not to watch porn or masturbate and then never indulge with it again on your first try, you probably didn’t have a compulsion.

If you’re like most guys, you probably started watching porn and jerking off at a very young age(less than 12) and you did it regularly. You probably had or still have a compulsion to watch porn or masturbate.

Most guys will relapse many times before they can quit this addiction/compulsion.

It’s better to not treat relapses as a failure, but treat them as part of the nofap journey. You have to relapse many times before you can kick porn and masturbation out of your life.

The best thing you can do is to learn from your relapses. Find out the reasons behind your relapse and eliminate those reasons.

If after a relapse, you find that social media was the reason for your relapse, then quit social media. If you find that being alone in your room was the reason, don’t spend much time in your room alone. If boredom was the reason behind your relapse, keep yourself occupied.

This way, after every relapse, you need to find out the circumstances or reason behind your relapse and work on eliminating that reason, so that you don’t relapse due to that reason again.

Quitting porn and masturbation is a long journey and you’re gonna have to cross the hurdles of relapses before being free from it.

7. Get Educated About NoFap

The best way to be on track and avoid relapses is to keep educating yourself about nofap.

The more you learn about nofap, the better you become at it.

You can read various other articles I’ve written on nofap or read other people’s articles. You can also watch nofap videos on youtube and get a better understanding of how to succeed at it.

GoldjacketLuke and Seth Alexander have very good nofap content on youtube.

You can also participate in various online nofap forums and learn from other people’s failures and successes.

NoFap forum on Reddit, r/nofap is the biggest and most popular nofap forum out there. Reboot nation forum and forum.nofap.com are also good.

If you’re experiencing the negative side effects of porn and masturbation and are trying to it, I recommend reading the book “Your Brain on Porn” by Gary Wilson. It explains the scientific reason behind porn affecting our brain negatively and what you can do to quit it. It’s the best book I’ve read on the topic. It is available on Amazon.
